What happens when a model is deprecated or retired?

When we decide to deprecate a model:

You get a minimum of two weeks' notice before a model is deactivated: an email if you've used it recently, a public changelog post with the deactivation date, and a deprecated tag in the product. Every deprecation comes with a recommended replacement, named in the email and docs.

Model IDs are never silently swapped. Every model version is its own endpoint — new versions launch separately, and upgrading is a choice you make in your code. On deactivation day, the old model ID simply returns an error.

Your options:

1. Switch to the recommended replacement — usually just a model ID swap.

2. Move to a dedicated deployment if the model is production-critical — start here.
